Down in the Glen, written by Karan, devise a key twinkling in the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, implicate two ladies fighters whose contribution has antecedently gone virtually unrecognised and who were in a relationship for most of their adult living. It is markedly unwritten in title, regret-liking (although both ladies survived) and with Mike McGoldrick adding peculiar, mournful storeship. The cantatory is proper sublime.

When I first listened to Hieroglyphs That Tell the Tale, I texted a friend to Saw that I thought it could be Irish singer Karan Casey’s best album yet. After many, many listens, and the joy of listen again to her precedent loosen, I have to temper that I was twisted – retrench ‘could be’ and insert ‘is’. We first auricular Karan’s consummate voice on the incentive coming-out Solas album in 1996, quickly go after in 1997 by Songlines, her first solo album. Two more Solas albums and six solo once followed, together with the pure Exile’s Return, a back to abc's old-fashioned album with former Solas bandmate John Doyle in 2010. The new album is as complete as it gets.
